Q-PEERS is an exhibition of small artworks by 9 artists living in New York,
Germany and Japan. The definition of Q-PEERS is as follows:
Q: (kyu) the pronunciation of the number 9 in Japanese.
PEE: a slang word for urine in English.
PEERS: a group of colleagues.
The gallery, named Albatross Gallery and Bar is on "Pee Street" in Shinjuku city.
This is a street that retains the feeling and atmosphere of a post
World War II Asian city, although it is surrounded by contemporary
commercial areas and high-rise buildings. For a long time, many people have
loved this area for it's rich character and the low priced restaurants and
bars that line the street.
The art world standard "white cube" gallery space is not the only place for
art. Art should expand its activity in the city, into nature and into life.
Artists' need to seek more free styles and forms, and their desire to share
the pleasure of their expression with a wider audience has pushed this idea
forward. This concept reflects the very frank feelings and creative activity
of each or the participants as an artist.
This area in its archetypal form continues the daily hustle and bustle of
contemporary life. This place has the power to attract people from around
the world. The people who visit this extraordinary area mingle with Asian
culture and politics as they cross over from the future to the past. And so
our artworks cross over into life.
