CHINESE BIENNIAL 2008 in BEIJING

EXHIBITION
The Chinese Biennial , the first of such in the world, is scheduled to be held in the &Chinese Base in Beijing from August 2 to September 2, 2008. It will be one of higher academic level among the contemporary art exhibitions held in Beijing in 2008.

The scope of the &Chinese Biennial covers : Chinese Character Art Installations, poetry and plays, Chinese character video displays, art performances, Chinese character music recitals, Chinese character architecture, Chinese character sculpture, Chinese character fashion show and more. 37 artists from China and the world will join the show, namely, from China mainland , Hong Kong and Taiwan, USA, Canada, Australia, Chile, Philippines, Germany, Korea, Japan,Singapore, UK, Spain, etc.

The Chinese characters (Hanz i) often strike many with the impression of being planer in form ( as manifested in calligraphy, memorial slab scriptures, traditional and computerized printing, etc. ). The root for this lies in the unlimited emphasis of the use of Chinese characters in plane media. Moreover, the division of China*s traditional art into that of the literati, that of the craftsmen, that of the officials and that of the practitioner artists with a strict differentiation in grade, is gravely biased. They stress on planar show and neglect 3-D presentation ; they stress the form of the frontal side and neglect the back side; they emphasize its brushwork grace and neglect its carving sharpness. Such tendency has exerted for several thousand years an invisible and subtle force such as suppress the extension of the Hanzi into space. In reality, the intrinsic spatial structure of the Hanzi obeys a set of definite sculptural laws in support of a brand new theory of spatial Chinese character art.

The academic foci of the first global scale & Chinese Biennial on the spatialization of Chinese character Art are : how to drag the Hazji step by step out of its flat, planar visual tradition , of how to remold the vulnerable cultural gene of stressing on &empty talk at the expense of &practical innovation, of how to restore the force bound in the spatial structure of Chinese characters art and how to extricate the Chinese characters from being nibbled up by oriental false art notions and to raise the space aspect of Chinese characters to a new level of international art study, culminating in adding to the global contemporary art a brand new art species.

The international climate has been getting ripe for the development of the spatial Chinese character art movement. The Chinese language has become de facto the second biggest language system. It has the accumulation of a millennia long civilization and the potentiality of its treasure being constantly dug up. The Chinese character art movement is seen to require a more solid unfolding and greater living room than ever before and the complete spatialization of the Chinese character art movement is considered as an important means to realize a brand new art idea.
